The Bible has a lot to say about the joy of the Lord. God is a very happy person (unlike the common misconception that God is stern and is usually pointing out our faults). One reason I love the Psalms is because they are praising the Lord for the mighty things He has done.
Take Psalm 148 for an example: Praise ye the Lord. Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: praise him in the heights. Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created. He hath also stablished them for ever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass. Praise the Lord from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps: Fire, and hail; snow, and vapours; stormy wind fulfilling his word: Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars: Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl: Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth: Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children: Let them praise the name of the Lord: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven. He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the Lord.
Amazing! The psalmist is pouring out praise to God in a very eloquent way. Since all scripture is given by inspiration of God, this is an indicator of how God feels: Happy!
Also consider this: In Hebrews 12:2 it says: Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
What was set before Jesus? We were. Jesus came to gather us to Himself and live in us. So, guess what! We are His joy: who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross; Jesus is incredibly happy. It’s all over the Bible: Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11
And he brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness: Psalm 105:43
For the Lord shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the Lord; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody. Isaiah 51:3
Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer. Isaiah 56:7
The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. Zephaniah 3:17
In the New Testament too:
Enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:21
I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, Luke 15:7
These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full. John 15:11
If we want to be like Jesus, we can start by being happy.
I hoped this encouraged you!
